Co-founded by Greg Devine and Alex Fletcher in late 2023, Frontiers On Foot is a young company with ambitious goals.
Greg and Alex met at university in Liverpool in 2010 and quickly bonded over a shared love of rugby, cheesy ’80s music, and the natural world. Swapping stories from their volunteering experiences in South Africa, they became fast friends.
Over the years, life took them in different directions — to different countries and into corporate jobs, far removed from the world of ecology and conservation. But after a long-overdue catch-up, a phone call sparked the beginnings of an idea, a goal, and a mission. That’s when Frontiers On Foot was born.
The inspiration behind the project came from a growing frustration with the state of wildlife volunteering. Many so-called “conservation” or “eco” programs turned out to be expensive, ethically questionable ventures with little real impact. One experience stood out in particular — a Big Five volunteer program that turned out to be propping up a canned hunting operation. That’s exactly what we want to change.
Our Story
Our mission is to inspire a global network of passionate individuals to safeguard our planet’s future through wildlife conservation.
The lack of transparency and the prevalence of pay-to-play models is a significant put off for anyone looking for truly beneficial volunteering work in wildlife conservation. Volunteering, which should be rooted in purpose and impact, has become a buzzword too often associated with vanity projects or short-term tourism. Whilst we understand volunteering does involve a cost, it should still be as accessible as possible, with as much of the funding going straight back into the projects and communities themselves.
We are determined to change the narrative to create a platform where ethical, accessible and sustainable conservation efforts, in collaboration with passionate and inspirational local organisations, are not the exception, but the standard.
