Costs and Funding

  • The truth is, there isn't a huge amount of money within conservation. Many organisations are very reliant on goodwill and donations in order to operate. Meaning paying careers are limited. The role volunteers play helps conservation organisations with invaluable support both financially and with feet on the ground.
    In return, you will receive a truly one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime experience where you will get to meet people from all walks of life and be able to immerse yourself in wildlife that few get to witness first hand.

  • You will receive advice and support before you travel along with your room, board and in-field training whilst you are on location. Your transport to the project site once you arrive in the country is covered if required. Most importantly, access to the most unique and awe-inspiring locations on the planet!

  • Flights are not included. We can give you advice on travel from your country, but ultimately how and when you travel, or organise your trip around one of our volunteer projects, is up to you.

  • Flights, visas and spending money are not included in the program fee.

  • Of course! We understand that paying all at once may not be possible for everyone. We always ask for a non-refundable deposit of 25%, but we can be flexible with the remaining payments. However, please note that if the full payment is not complete before your project start date then you will not be able to participate.

  • We currently do not offer scholarships or fundraising support. Any discounts will be advertised through our social media platforms, so be sure to keep an eye out for those. We can offer a discount if you sign up for multiple projects.

  • Yes! The majority of the project fee goes directly into the conservation work on the ground.

Travel and Safety

  • We can provide travel advice but arranging your flights and any required visas, as well as associated costs, are your responsibility. We can arrange transport to the project location once you are in the country, if required.

  • A visa may be required depending on the regulations in your country of birth or residence. Please check with your local government body regarding travel restrictions to any of our project locations.

  • We will provide a health and safety briefing to all our volunteers before the project start date. Vaccinations may be dependent not only on the destination, but also the country of origin. It is therefore advised to check with your local government body for travel advice.

  • Yes, both Frontiers On Foot and our partner organisations require volunteers to have travel insurance before joining us in the field.

  • We work closely with our local partners to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for our volunteers upon entering a new country. We follow the travel advice on GOV.UK and will make any necessary adjustments accordingly.

  • The project staff will provide a safety briefing on arrival outlining any safety precautions necessary both on site and in the local community. Each project will have a First Aid kit and a trained member of staff on site.

General Understanding, Impact and Ethics

  • Frontiers On Foot was created in 2023 with a mission to assist wildlife conservation organisations, projects and initiatives on a global scale. One of the ways in which we manifest this is through volunteer projects in partnership with trusted organisations in locations around the world.

  • The primary focus of our projects is wildlife conservation, but in order to conserve wildlife we need to be active on a much broader canvas. A typical volunteer project will include community engagement, data analysis, general reserve maintenance and much more, keeping the project as varied and stimulating to our volunteers as possible.

  • Through our partnerships, we support habitat restoration, wildlife protection and sustainable community initiatives worldwide.

  • We focus on immersive, ethical experiences with a specific aim of inspiring our volunteers to make valuable contributions within the field of wildlife conservation. We are hands-on, personable and open with regards to the recruitment and onboarding of volunteers.

  • Yes, of course. We regularly post field updates on our social media platforms and you can join our mailing list to receive our monthly newsletter. If you’d like to return to the project, or join us at one of our other locations, we offer a return volunteer discount.

  • We work with the local communities through conservation education and collaborative initiatives and projects. 

  • No experience is needed - just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. Full training is provided.

  • The minimum age to join our projects is 18. Though there is technically no upper age limit to volunteer, the field work can be physically demanding so a suitable level of fitness is required.

  • Yes, we can arrange placements for couples, families or groups at any of our project sites.

  • Absolutely. We ensure a strong sense of community at each project location and will ensure any solo travellers feel like a part of the group.

Who Can Volunteer?

Locations and Timing

  • Our volunteer projects are located in Argentina, Panama and Zimbabwe. Please refer to the “projects page” for more information.

  • Our projects run throughout the year, typically lasting from 4 to 12 weeks.

  • Yes, most placements are flexible to match your availability.

  • Climate plays a significant role in our project activities. Please refer to the “projects page” for more detailed information regarding the seasonal weather conditions and how they may affect your experience as a volunteer.

  • Tasks will be varied and are dependent on the needs of each of our projects at the time. Daily activities range from wildlife surveying and monitoring, habitat restoration, invasive species control, community outreach, data analysis, social media content creation and much, much more.

  • All projects require hands-on conservation placing our volunteers in the heart of nature. We are not a petting zoo nor do we condone unethical practices towards native wildlife.

  • Physical levels vary. Some activities require moderate fitness levels. Volunteers will be briefed before the start of the project.

  • Yes, all volunteers will receive comprehensive onboarding and orientation upon arrival, with any necessary field-specific training organised on location through our partners.

Project Activities

  • Volunteers will stay in lodges, camps or dormitories depending on the project location. Accommodation is rustic, but comfortable.

  • Meals are provided, though in some instances the volunteers will be expected to assist in the cooking and preparation. All applicants are encouraged to state any dietary requirements upon booking.

  • Wifi availability is dependent on the project location. We recommend taking a look at the “projects page” for up-to-date information on connectivity. Standard amenities are available at all volunteer headquarters. We may take overnight trips out to remote locations for fieldwork where the facilities are more basic.

  • Volunteers are expected to share living spaces. Separate bedrooms may be available depending on the project location.

Accommodation and Living

Preparation and Support

  • We will send you a packing list of essential and recommended items when you sign up for a project. 

  • Yes absolutely! You will receive a pre-departure document outlining the details of your trip including travel advice, a packing list, health and safety information and what to expect in the field before you depart. There will also be an orientation provided by field staff on site when you arrive.

  • You are welcome to contact any of the Frontiers on Foot administration team via email or over the phone before or during your trip.

Certification and Career Development

  • Yes to both. You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of your project and we are happy to provide you with a written reference if needed.

  • Absolutely! If you are working towards a career in conservation then volunteering can teach you useful practical field skills, how to communicate and work within a team and increase your awareness of global conservation issues. A volunteering experience can help boost your university application or CV and we are always happy to provide a reference.

  • We do not offer internships or leadership roles at this time, but we potentially will in the future.
